The Department of Community Medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, organized a virtual “Symposium on Applied Research in tobacco Control and Regional stakeholder meeting” in collaboration with the Tobacco Control Capacity Program (TCCP) and the Government of Karnataka held on 16th September 2021.
TCCP is a consortium of 15 universities to enable capacity building across LMICs. The event was inaugurated by Dr. M. Selvarajan (Deputy Director [Medical], State Program Officer, NTCP, MOHFW, Government of Karnataka) and Key note address delivered by Prof. Jeff Collin (University of Edinburgh, UK) and Dr. Sharath K Rao (Dean, KMC, Manipal) presided over the inauguration. The research fellows in the Tobacco Control Capacity Program Mr. Praveen Kumar and Dr. Somya Mullapudi presented their study findings pertaining to monitoring tobacco industry interference and health warnings on tobacco packs and the sessions were chaired by Dr. Veena G Kamath and Dr. Muralidhar M Kulkarni. The event also discussed measures to be undertaken to strengthen tobacco control efforts in Karnataka.
The event witnessed participation from District and State Tobacco control committee members, academicians, civil society members along with National and International experts. The symposium concluded with vote of thanks by Ms. Radhika Nayak, Research Coordinator of the project.
