A nightjar is captured by a photographer as it swoops down to the surface of a pond to quench its thirst. The sight was captured on camera by Scott Linstead, using special motion sensor technology. He had set up an infrared beam at the pond, in Amado, Arizona, which automatically tripped the camera flash when it sensed movement. He’d hope to catch bats drinking from the water but was instead treated to a surprise visit from the nightjar. His high speed shot shows how the bird skims the water with its beak open to drink and ingest insects. Mr Linstead, from Quebec, Canada, believes his shot could be the first ever to capture the bird drinking. He said: "It was a thrill to see such a relatively larger creature flying over the pond. It’s a bit weird looking but I think it may be the only picture of a nightjar open mouth and drinking."
