Teenager allowed to stay with social worker
Udupi: The teenager, who was forced to flee home in Bangalore after she was married off to her maternal uncle against her wishes, has been allowed to stay with social worker Radha Das for a couple of days.
Meenakshi, sub-inspector at the Women’s Police Station at Kundapur, told The Hindu over phone on Wednesday that the teenager had made a request in this regard. However, Ms. Das had been told to produce her whenever she was wanted by the police. Parents of the teenager had lodged a complaint of kidnapping in Bangalore, Ms. Meenakshi said. A team of police officials from Bangalore are expected to arrive in Kundapur shortly. Ms. Das said she had taken the teenager to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Women’s Helpline and president of the District Federation of Mahila Mandals on April 5 and explained the case to them. Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha was out of town for two days. A decision regarding teenager will be taken after Ms. Hemalatha’s return. If she wants to stay away from her parents, arrangements will have to be made for her stay and completion of studies. Ms. Das took the teenager to the Kundapur Women’s Police Station on Tuesday, where her statement was recorded. Ms. Das said the sub-inspector of the High Grounds police station in Bangalore had contacted her on Wednesday . The teenager, who was at Ms. Das’s house, said her mother and husband had taken her signature on a blank stamp paper, when she was in Bangalore. “I don’t know what they have written on the stamp paper. Some of my so-called well-wishers are spreading rumours about me in Bangalore. When I am struggling to get out of my forced marriage, these malicious rumours are only adding to my agony and anguish,” she said.
