Udupi : The money collected in the specific offering boxes allotted for beggars’ at St Lawrence Shrine, Attur, Karkala during the five days annual feast was equally distributed themselves on Friday, 29^th January, 2016.

The begging has been banned during the annual feast was held at the Shrine, Attur Karkala in all five days of festival. The offering boxes for the specially kept boxes at three locations at the Shrine for the devotees to drop their contributions.

Rs. 10.84 lacs was collected in three specially kept for beggars’ in three different locations were distributed depending on their disabilities after the free lunch at the Shrine on Friday to over 1,500 beggars from across Karnataka and other neighboring states also.

The youth and children who are capable of working capabilities were given only free handed over food and no money. Meanwhile those who are not capable of working were given money, food packets and free lunch by the volunteers.

The public relation officer of the Shrine John D’Silva said that the begging was banned on access road to the Shrine as per the government rules and regulations that not to allow begging in public places that lead to public disturbances and inconveniences to the devotees. The begging ban remains in force since 16 years in the Shrine. The offerings collected on end of the festival and distributed to beggars depending on their disabilities.

Lucas D’Souza, one of the devotee who had come from Sasthan to the Shrine on Friday also distributed food packets and alms to the destitute on the occasion.

During the distribution of offerings to beggars, Rev Fr. George D’Souza Rector of Shrine and parish priest of Attur Church, Assistant Parish Priest Rev Fr. Vijay D’Souza, Solomon, Praveen, Roshan and members of the ICYM of parish unit were present.
