Boat, fish and heart made out of flowers, model terrace garden are cynosure of all eyes

A heart, a boat and a fish made out of roses and other flowers; a watermelon and a papaya carved out as roses, a veena-like instrument carved out of yellow pumpkin and snake gourd, a swan carved out of a pumpkin, are among the many attractions at the three-day fruit and flower show, which began at the Flower Auction Centre, Doddanagudde, here on Friday.

The flowers on display included marigold, French marigold, petunia, verbena, coleus, impatiens, celosia, gomphrena, dahlia, aster and sunflower.

Other decorative flowers including Oriental Lily, Asiatic Lily, Tube Rose, Bird of Paradise, were on display at the show. A “mantapa” made out of plantain stems was yet another attraction.

Most of the people who visited the venue were seen taking either photographs or selfies of the big boat, fish and heart made out of roses and other flowers.

Sandhya Yadav from Bengaluru, who decorated these figures, said that 1,000 carnations and 3,500 roses were used in decorating the boat and heart.

Among the horticultural products on display were tender coconut, arecanut, cashew, black pepper and cocoa, fruits such as banana, pineapple, jackfruit and papaya.

There was an exhibition of the Shankarpura Mallige (Shankarpura jasmine) and Mattu Gulla vegetable, both from Udupi district, which enjoyed Geographical Indication tag.

The “rangoli” of leaders such as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Subashchandra Bose and writer Kota Shivaram Karanth by Shivalingappa C.B. was another attraction.

The Model Terrace Garden created on the terrace of one of the buildings of the Flower Auction Centre attracted a lot of people.

Vegetables such as brinjal, ridge gourd, cucumber, okra, and cowpeas were grown in flower pots. The show drew praise from those who visited it. Rajagopal P.K., retired Botany professor, said that he was impressed by the Model Terrace Garden.

“It has shown the possibilities of growing vegetables on our terraces. This show is worth the effort, that too in Udupi,” he said. Pandurang Pai, a senior citizen from Malpe, wished that such a show was held annually, if not every month. Sadashiva Rao, former Principal of Poornaprajna College, said that the show was arranged in a spacious venue where people could watch without bumping into one another. “It is a lovely show. I will come again tomorrow,” he said.
