Thousands of devotees flock to Attur shrine - 3rd day pictures.
Karkala, Jan 27: The Five day festival of the Miracle shrine of St Lawrence in Attur, Karkala began with new vigour and devotion here on Sunday, January 24. . Being a national holiday thousands visited the shrine on the 3rd day. According to the sources this is the largest ever crowd visited the shrine on a Tuesday in the history of its annual feast.
On January 26, at 4.30 pm, Dr Eugene, Bishop of Varanasi offered the mass in English. www. Kemmannu.com pleased to bring you the pictures of this service. Later Kannada mass was offered by Ballari Bishop Dr Henry D’Souza at 6 pm.
On January 27 Belthangady Bishop Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhi will deliver the mass in Kannada at 4.30 pm. Mangalore Bishop, Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, will hold mass in Konkani at 10.30 am on the same day.
Udupi Bishop, Dr Gerald Issac Lobo, will hold mass in Konkani at 10 am on January 28.
Earlier on 24th a procession of the holy sacrament was taken out from the shrine to the ground in Chetana Halli and back to the shrine. Rev Fr Herald Pereira resident preist of Kemmannu Church during the celebration highlighted the services of Christians in the fields of education and healthcare. On 24th Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, Parish Priest, Kemmannu Church offered the mass at 11.00 AM.
For the annual feast that witness’s participation of people from various parts of the state and from all religions will have 41 masses offered in five days by five Bishops from different diocese.
Holy Eucharist for children and the sick was held on January 24 and 25 respectively in Konkani followed with special prayers.
The first mass of the five-day festival was celebrated at 7.30 am and the second mass was celebrated at 9 am. There were special masses on Monday for the children as well as the sick with special prayers for them. Monday was crowded with devotees.
Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo the Bishop of Udupi together with Fr George D’Souza, the Shrine Rector is guiding the festive celebrations. The Bishop of Udupi is residing in the shrine for 5 days to guide the festivities.
Even though geographically the Attur-Karkala shrine belongs to the Udupi diocese, priests, religious and deacons from the undivided Mangalore diocese and other neighbouring dioceses have willingly involved themselves in the shrine festivities especially in the confessional ministry.
Arrangements have been made systematically to cater to the needs of the devotees. The rector, the chaplain, parish vice-president, local panchayat administration, police and administrative services, Attur parishioners, Karkala deanery Catholic Sabha, diocesan as well as religious priests, sisters and lay leaders have joined hands with spiritual zeal as to make the festival a great success.

I guess I was seven or eight year old. I grumbled at my mother, "Why should I carry this heavey water melon from Karkal to Barkur, when it’s available and much cheaper in Sasthan Santhe?" Those were the good old days! though.
Mine is a lukewarm request. I am already told, "You can’t make them drink, but keep offering H2O". Thanks folks.
I did and within weeks my eldest daughter BE, MS., got a match with a Mangalorean boy BE, MBA and is today a Vice President, IT with a leading multinational in the USA. My second daughter also got a US Visa, completed her MS and now in a senior position.
