Child is the root of society which need attention and protection - Mrs. Kripa Alva
Udupi : Child is the root of the society. How we take care of plant, like the period of child requires a particular attention and protection as well, said Mrs. Dr. Kripa Alva, Chairperson, State Commission for protection of Child Rights, Karnataka.
She was addressing a inaugural State level conference on Child Protection – A need & Opportunity held at Milagres College, Kallianpur near here Silver Jubilee Hall which organized by Milagres College Post Graduate Department of Social Work in collaboration with UNICEF and Shanthi Sandesha Trust, Mangalore on Monday, 16th November, 2015.
She said we do need child rights to let human being live with dignity. We do need legal legislation to protect child. The child protection must be ensured by the parents and community. The role of parents in childhood protection must have competencies, knowledge and motivation to provide effective protection for children. They must identify and react against possible cases of discrimination, neglect or mistreatment, she said.
Every child need sufficient education and so most of problems of childhood to be solved due to the education. The problems of child labour, child marriage and other major problems can be solved through sufficient education as well. It would be responsibility of the parents and communities responsibility to give proper education, she said. The society should know the children’s rights like life, education, health, food, freedom, protection etc., The protection of child starts from mother’s womb. Even child is not safe in mother’s womb, which the percentage of ratio of men and women decreases marginally will be concern of the society, she said.

Sonykutty George Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF, Hyderabad, Mrs. Naga Jyothi President of Juvenile Justice Board and Chief Judicial Megistrate, Udupi, Mrs Gracy Gonsalves Deputy Director of Department of Women and Child Development, Udupi, Very Rev. Fr. Stany B. Lobo Correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions, Kallianpur, Sr. Clara Menezes, member of Shanthi Sandesha Trust, Mangalore, Dr. Nery Cornelio Principal of Milagres College, Kallianpur, Sr. Dulcin Crasta, Director of Resource & Development Centre, Shanthi Sandesha Trust of Mangalore and Sr. Lilly Pushpa Coordinator of MSW Post Graduate Department and Convener of the Conference, Milagres College, Kallianpur were present on the dais.
During in his key note address Sonykutty George said that children need proper counseling. The period of childhood is a phase in which the human being is more vulnerable and need more protection and care. Children deserve a particular attention and care. The efficient protection and care is essential to the children’s well being because as vulnerable people, they are more exposed to problems mistreatment, exploitation, discrimination, violation etc.
Rev Fr. Lawrence C. D’Souza during in his presidential address said that child is not safe at all places and child should be protected. Child is not safe in womb of mother, child is not safe in home, child is not safe in the school, child is not safe in society etc., It shall be necessity to protect child in all these places specially. Adults must have competencies, knowledge and motivation to provide effective protection of the children.
Mrs. Nagajyothi said during her speech that in order to ensure child’s well being state administration must establish effective protective systems includes laws, politics, procedures and practices intended to prevent and fight against can damage a child’s well being. Each child is a unique human with specific needs to be fulfilled.
During the occasion best social research awards were given by the guests on the dais. Meanwhile felicitation also held for Rank holders of MSW Department, Milagres College, Kallianpur from the Mangalore University. The felicitated Rank Holders were Tippeswamy who secured first Rank, Niveditha and Pallavi who securedb both fourth Rank.
Earlier the programme started with invocation prayer. Dr. Nery Cornelio welcomed the gatherings. Melwyn Furtado and other compered the inaugural programme. Two days State level conference will be concluded with the valedictory function which Dr. Mohan Singhe Coordinator, Department of MSW, Mangalore University will give valedictory address. Savitha Kotian President of ZP, Udupi, Annamalai Superintendent of Police, Udupi, B.K. Narayan President of Child Welfare Committee, Udupi and others will be chief guests.
