Indians celebrated the first day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival on Thursday, carrying idols of the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh through the streets to mark his birthday.

During the festival, temporary structures, or pandals, are erected in streets and housing complexes so that worshippers can make offerings to the idols. The 10-day event culminates with mass-emersions of the idols at Indian beaches.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in Mumbai, and Bollywood celebrities have also brought Ganpati idols at their homes.

Salman Khan, who celebrates the auspicious festival every year, invited many tinsel town celebrities to join his family on Ganesh Chaturthi. Athiya Shetty, Sooraj Pancholi, Elli Avram, Amy Jackson, Jackie Shroff, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu and other stars were part of the festivities on Thursday.

The "Dil Dhadakne Do" actor Anil Kapoor also held a puja on Lord Ganesh’s festival. Sridevi, Boney Kapoor with their two daughters, Sonam Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Shraddha Kapoor’s brother Siddhanth and many others joined the Kapoor family’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebration at Anil Kapoor’s residence.

Govinda too brought Ganpati home and offered prayers along with his wife and children.

Several Bollywood stars including Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Richa Chaddha, have shared pictures of their beautiful Ganpati idols that they have brought home on their social networking sites.
