Heavy rains continued to lash the city on Tuesday slowing down traffic and train movement. A high tide of 4.95 metres in the afternoon coincided with the downpour resulting in flooding in several low-lying areas.
The Colaba weather station recorded rainfall of 30.2 mm, while Santa Cruz recorded 7.0 mm rainfall. Central Railway trains were reportedly running 10-15 minutes late. Traffic moved very slowly especially on the Western Express Highway, Juhu Circle, Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road and Khar subway.
Many people gathered along the sea to enjoy the high tide. Marine Drive in south Mumbai was teeming with people as large waves hit the promenade.
“There have been no instances of major disaster as of now. We are keeping an eye especially in low-lying areas and have deployed disaster control teams near beaches and water-fronts,” said an official from the disaster management cell of the municipality.
Meanwhile, the six lakes that supply water to the city received rainfall and added a marginal increase to their useful water content. In total, the water content stood at around 97,000 million litres. For the city to be able to tide over smoothly in the coming year, the lakes need to have a stock of 13 lakh million litres of water in September.
