UDUPI  JULY -7(TNN) : Vinay Kumar Sorake, minister for urban development and Udupi district in-charge on Sunday inaugurated the new-look out-patient department complex of Dr TMA Pai Hospital in Udupi on Sunday. Pramod Madhwaraj, Udupi MLA inaugurated the new ultrasound facility and Raghupathi Bhat, former Udupi MLA the renovated pharmacy services, with centralized air-condition facility. The hospital is managed by Manipal University.

 Sorake said, "I am associated with the hospital; right from the days of its inception."Recollecting that he was present when the hospital in-patient block was inaugurated a decade back, Sorake said he was happy to note that this type of better facility is now being made available to people at the hospital. It is important to improve services as diseases are numerous and are spreading fast and facilities like this are essential to provide quality healthcare to people.

 Quality of healthcare is an important area, Sorake said, addinghe was happy that Dr TMA Pai Hospital in Udupi is maintaining its impressive quality of services.

 Pramod recollected the days when he was student at Mukunda Krupa School and classes for 8th and 9th standard were in the same block those days. To help patients benefit more, all the various healthcare schemes of the state government of namely Vajpayee Arogyashree scheme, ESI, Yashasvini and Balasanjeevani will be brought under single umbrella for better coordination. This will enable patients to avail better access to advanced healthcare facilities.

 Ragupathi Bhat recollecting that he and Pramod underwent schooling in this very OPD building expressed concern over the fact that cost of drugsis on an increasing trend and is posing problems for economically poor patients, financially. Bhat said he insists people to go to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal for care initially, rather than at the later stages. But for primary cases, Dr T M A Pai hospital is providing the excellent healthcare services for Udupi population.

 Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Manipal University said, "Manipal University spends more money on corporate social responsibility than the industry average. We spend about Rs 30 crore to take care of BPL category of population. Manipal group hospitals use generic drugsthat are provided at lesser cost to provide relief to patient, he said adding the hospital as a secondary care centre, is ideal facility as people need not approach tertiary care centre like Kasturba Hospital.

The hospital that began functioning in 1984 under then Manipal Academy of Higher Education (now Manipal University) to provide out-patient and family-planning services to the people of Udupi and the nearby areas has been renovated and expanded.

 Pramod Madhwaraj, Udupi MLA will dedicate the new ultrasound facility. Raghupathy Bhat, former Udupi MLA will dedicate the renovated pharmacy services with centralized air-condition facility. The hospital is a secondary healthcare Institution with a capacity of 200 beds and provides healthcare services including for obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, general medicine, cardiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, and dermatology.

 Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr Parvati Bhat, said the hospital that also provides dentistry, ayurveda, speech and hearing, respiratory therapy and physiotherapy services has become a leading centres for maternal and child care in the district with over 100 deliveries being performed every month. "We provide healthcare facilities to over 1.4 lakh outpatients; over 8,000 inpatients and over 2,000 surgeries are done every year," she said.

 Equipped with 8-bedded state-of-the-art infrastructure like intensive care units with four ventilators, four fully-equipped operation theatres, radiology support services, ultrasound, advanced laboratory, the hospital now offers quality secondary level care," Dr Bhat said. The Hospital has close ties with tertiary level centre in Kasturba Hospital here, which ensures priority treatment to patients on referral and to deal with emergencies.

 Dr Bhat also added that clinical departments are headed by committed doctors, well-trained nursing team and other paramedical staffs supports the endeavor to provide comprehensive secondary level healthcare services to patients across the different strata of the society. The Hospital offers cashless treatment facility to the Manipal Arogya Suraksha scheme patients and also offers cashless facility to various Insurance scheme patients, she adds.
