Udupi : The Home Guards have been performing duties on par with the police department and the performance of the Home Guards during the Corona period has been appreciated by the people. District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that the Home Guard personnel are known in the country for serving on the lines of police and the Home Guard service is unique.

He was speaking after inaugurating the valedictory function of the West Zone Professional Sports Meet organised by the District Home Guards at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, Ajjarakadu in the city today.
The Home Guard works neatly during the most crowded events. There are examples of people being asked to appoint home guards themselves, who are one step ahead of the police in managing vehicular traffic. This is the duty of the home guard. He said that Home Guards have given life to many people irrespective of their age.

Like the police department, the home guards do not get any kind of health services. Lakhs of rupees are spent on medical treatment. A person’s entire life is spent on medical expenses. In case of untimely death of a person, there is no financial security for the family. To solve all these problems, a health insurance package will be made available in collaboration with private banks.
Zilla panchayat chief executive officer Prateek Bayal said that home guards who are doing selfless service in the society during emergencies should also take care of their health. He said that sports helps in maintaining good physical and mental health.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of the competitions.
Udupi district president, Dr D.K. District Athletics Association president Hariprasad Rai and others were present.
