‘Kuvempu Literary Club of SMS College’ Celebrates Gandhi Jayanthi on 2nd October, with Inspiring Talk
The Kuvempu Literary Club (KLC) of SMS College, Brahmavar, organized a thought-provoking programme on the life and ideals of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The event was graced by Mr. Aravinda Chokkadi, renowned thinker, columnist, and educationist, who delivered an inspiring lecture on ‘the relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy, especially for today’s youth’.

The programme began on a soulful note with an invocation by Ms. Dhanvantari and Ms. Soujanya, followed by a warm welcome by Ms. Chandana. Mr. Alfred Furtado, Lecturer in English and Convener of the Club, set the tone with his insightful introductory remarks, highlighting the purpose of the programme. To honor the Bapuji, the Father of the Nation, the dignitaries lit the lamp before Gandhi’s portrait.
Ms. Shruti introduced the Guest Speaker with elegance, after which Mr. Chokkadi delivered a marathon speech that deeply engaged the audience. In his address, he emphasized several key points:

• Gandhi’s critics often fail to understand his true ideology.
• A true Hindu, Gandhi believed in’ Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and never hated the British, though he firmly opposed their imperialism.
• Non-violence is not cowardice; rather, violence is the last weapon of a coward.
• Simplicity leads to self-reliance.
• Today’s political system often misuses the youth.
• Young people should focus on building their careers with discipline—the secret of success.
• It is easy to destroy but difficult to construct.
• Nothing lasting can be achieved through violence.

Following his lecture, an interactive session with the students brought the hall alive. Mr. Chokkadi cleared misconceptions with wit, humor, and clarity, winning the admiration of the youth.
To further enrich the programme, a ‘Book Exhibition on and by Gandhi’ was arranged, along with a ‘Poster Display’ prepared by students, showcasing the Mahatma’s life and contributions.
In his presidential address, Dr. Robert Rodrigues, Principal of the SMS First Grade College, appreciated the efforts of KLC and reiterated the importance of conducting such meaningful events to inspire the younger generation, especially College students…

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Abhijna, while Ms. Anupama and Ms. Divyajyothi meticulously compered the programme, ensuring its smooth flow.
The event not only paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi but also left the students with timeless lessons of simplicity, discipline, non-violence, and self-reliance. He and his thoughts, way of life and philosophy is more relevant today as the world at large remember him as prince of peace, a symbol of Non Violence as his Birthday deservedly observed as ‘International Day of Non Violence’ as a testament to his impact on peace and human rights.
