Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist and Fond Farewell from the Diocese of Shimoga to Bishop Francis Serrao SJ
Shivamogga, September 29, 2025: On September 28, 2025, the Diocese of Shimoga organized a significant farewell ceremony for the beloved Bishop, Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao, SJ, in anticipation of his installation as the Bishop of the Diocese of Mysore on October 7, at 4:30 PM at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Mysore. The event which took place at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Shimoga, was attended by clergy, religious sisters, and lay members of the community, who convened to offer their respects and bid farewell to their spiritual leader.

The ceremony commenced with a Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm, presided over by Bishop Francis Serrao SJ, and concelebrated by clergy from the diocese. Following the Mass, a felicitation program was held to recognize the Bishop’s dedicated service to the diocese over the past eleven years and five months.
After the Mass at 7pm a short felicitatory program was held in the Church. Very Rev. Msgr Stany D’Souza,Vicar General of the Diocese, delivered congratulatory remarks on behalf of the Diocese, honoring Bishop Francis Serrao SJ. The ceremony marked the release of two publications: "Karunashree" and "Hombelaku." "Karunashree" presents a collection of Bishop Francis Serrao SJ’s Episcopal Pastoral ministry within the Diocese, spanning 11 years and 5 months. "Hombelaku" serves as a commemorative publication, specifically honoring Bishop Serrao’s ministry. Both publications were edited by Fr Franklin D’Souza, the Editor of the Diocesan Magazine, Hombelaku.

Ms. Lizzy, Joint Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, presented the "Sanmana Patra," a citation recognizing Bishop Serrao’s significant contributions to the diocese. Subsequently, Bishop Serrao was honored with a shawl, garland, peta, and fruit basket, representing the Shimoga Diocese faithful’s affection and gratitude. The felicitation was conducted by Very Rev.
Mnsgr Stany D’Souza, Vicar General of the Diocese of Shimoga, Very Rev. Fr Stephen Maxi Albuquerque, Chancellor of the Diocese of Shimoga, Mr Anthony Wilson, Secretary of Diocesan Pastoral Council, Rev. Fr Sunil Rodrigues OCD, CRI unit president, and Sr Rita Shanti, Secretary of CRI.

Bishop Serrao conveyed his appreciation to the diocesan community for their unwavering affection and backing throughout his term. Furthermore, Fr Veeresh Victor Moras, the Master of Ceremonies and the Public Relations Officer of the Diocese of Shimoga, extended a concise vote of thanks, recognizing the contributions of all individuals instrumental in the program’s success.
The public was given an opportunity to felicitate the bishop, and many took the chance to express their appreciation for his ministry.
The farewell ceremony was a fitting tribute to Bishop Serrao’s dedicated service to the Diocese of Shimoga. As he moves on to his new role, the people of the diocese wish him well and pray for his continued success.
The event concluded with a reception, where attendees were treated to snacks and refreshments.
