Udupi, May 29: Minister for Women and Child Development, Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens and district in-charge Laxmi R Hebbalkar said that the flood and other problems arising out of the heavy rains should be dealt with properly by taking necessary precautionary measures and responding quickly so that no person or livestock is harmed.

She was speaking after holding an online meeting with the officials to discuss the rain havoc at Kesavan video conference hall in the DC office complex at Manipal Rajathadri in the city today.
This time, the rainfall in the district was much more than expected. Since January, it has been 177.4 mm. It should have rained. It is 801.7 mm. The amount of rain has increased threefold. She said the district administration was fully geared up to face the flood situation in the next three months.
The control rooms at the district and taluk levels will function 24 * 7. Any complaints should be addressed immediately. She also said that relief should also be provided to those affected by the overflow, and information about the water level and inflow in the Varahi reservoir should be obtained from time to time. If there is any problem, the public should be informed in advance, she said.
Agriculture activities in the district have come to a standstill due to scanty rainfall. Adequate seeds and fertilisers should be provided to the farmers. There should be no problems, she said.
Tourists coming from outside the district are likely to die on the beach and without knowing about the rivulets, ponds and waterfalls. Warning boards should be put up for the public. If possible, staff should be deployed.
Crime is on the rise in Dakshina Kannada district. Minor incidents have also been reported in the district. Law and order should be maintained in the district. Care should be taken to see that law and order situation does not deteriorate unnecessarily, she said.

District in-charge secretary Satyavathi G said that officials and staff will be at the epicentre and they should be active to take up disaster management works at the earliest. She said that people should keep their mobile phones active 24 hours a day so that they can respond to complaints.

Control room numbers should be as simple as people think. She said that their maintenance should be dealt with systematically and care should be taken to avoid power outages caused by rain. The power supply should be restored soon, she said.
