Udupi, April 5: Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture, K Venkatesh, called upon the allied workers appointed to improve the health of animals in the district to serve better.

He was speaking after inaugurating the training programme of alliance workers held under the joint auspices of district administration, zilla panchayat and department of animal husbandry and veterinary services, Udupi district, at Dr V S Acharya auditorium of zilla panchayat, Rajatadri, Manipal.

The government has appointed allied workers, including veterinary doctors and veterinary staff, to improve the health of the animals. He called upon everyone to come forward to provide better health services to the animals and also benefit the livestock, including the farming community.

The workers have already been trained for three months. They should visit door-to-door within the limits of their animal health centres in urban and rural areas, collect information about the condition of the animals and provide necessary advice and treatment if there are problems in their health, he said.

At present, Rs 3700 is being given to the alliance workers. There is a need to increase it. This has been brought to the notice of the Union Agriculture Minister. Along with this, sincere efforts will be made to increase it by discussing with the Hon’ble Chief Minister.

MLA Yashpal A Suvarna said that the government has implemented many programmes for the development of dairy farming in Udupi district. He said that more energy and encouragement should be given to dairy farming and the vacant posts of veterinary doctors and staff in the district should be filled as soon as possible.

MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty said that the alliance workers are doing a virtuous work like protecting the health of dumb animals and the experience gained in training should be put to good use.

Joint Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Dr.Shivanna spoke introduction speech and said that  as per the 20th Livestock Census, there are 2.57 lakh cows and oil, 3107 goats, 3289 pigs, 1.18 lakh dogs and 11.43 lakh poultry in the district, 1 polyclinic, 12 veterinary hospitals, 38 veterinary clinics, 36 primary veterinary centres and 8 Pashu Sanjeevini ambulance units are functioning.

On the occasion, a short film on some of the programmes of the district animal husbandry department was also screened. The alliance kit was symbolically distributed to the alliance workers. The Minister released a brochure containing information on animal birth control and anti-venom vaccination.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP, District collector Dr. Vidyakumari, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Dr. Manjunath S Palekar,  Deputy Secretary of Zilla Panchayat Srinivasa Rao and others were present, Director Director of the Veterinary Council Dr. Sushanth Rai, Deputy Director, Mangaluru.
Deputy Director (Administration) of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department Dr. M. C. Reddappa welcomed the gathering. Uday Kumar Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
