Uzwaad, Konkani fortnightly celebrate its 11th Anniversary on Sunday, 16th February, 2025.
The esteemed Konkani fortnightly Uzwaad of the Udupi Diocese marked its 11th anniversary with a grand celebration on 16th February 2025 at Anugraha, at 4.30 pm reflecting on its journey of commitment to Konkani literature, culture, and journalism. The event was graced by a distinguished gathering, led by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi, who presided over the function. The Chief Guest, Mr. Valerian Quadros Ajekar, a renowned Konkani writer and novelist, was honoured in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the Konkani language and community.
A Celebration of Culture and Literature:
The program commenced with a soulful prayer song ‘ Ulay Ulay Mona, Aaikondi thin Zanna….’ Beautifully composed by Fr Alwyn Sequeira sung by the Choir of St. Theresa of Little Flower Church, Kemmannu, guided by Mrs Ida Fernandes, invoking divine blessings. This was followed by a vibrant welcome dance performed by the students of Milagres High School, Kallianpur, choreographed under the guidance of Sr. Anita, HM, and a dedicated member of the Editorial Team of Uzwaad.
Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, Chairman of Deepa Trust, and the Vicar General of the Diocese and Rector of Milagres Cathedral, warmly welcomed the gathering and the Editor and Members of Uzwaad Editorial Board extended floral tributes to the esteemed guests.
Honour and Recognition:
The highlight of the event was the felicitation of Mr. Valerian Quadros Ajekar, whose literary journey has enriched Konkani literature and journalism. A long list of his literary works, as editor, teacher and trainer, his achievements and awards - presented by Rev Fr Denis DSa, PRO of the Diocese.
Draped in the traditional shawl, he was also presented with a bouquet and a memento as a token of appreciation. In his emotional response, Mr. Quadros reminisced about his journey, sharing his vision and mission for the Konkani language. He emphasized the need to adapt to modern technology, the evolving preferences of youth and children, and the digital era’s potential for promoting Konkani literature and media.
Uzwaad’s Contributions and Achievements:
Rev. Fr. Alwyn Sequeira, Editor of Uzwaad, proudly announced the results of the literary and popular competitions conducted over the past year. The winners were honoured with cash prizes, trophies, and certificates, recognizing their literary talents and contributions to Konkani culture.
As a mark of appreciation for their steadfast support of Konkani journalism, the Daijiworld Team was represented by Mr. Praveen Tauro, who was felicitated with a shawl, memento, and words of gratitude. He expressed his admiration for Uzwaad’s remarkable efforts in fostering the Konkani language.
Unveiling of Literary Treasures:
A special moment of the evening was the release of two new books, adding to the rich tapestry of Konkani literature. One of these books was penned by Rev. Fr. Alwyn Sequeira, further demonstrating his multifaceted talent.
A Legacy of Leadership:
Prof. P. Archibald Furtado, Member of the Editorial Team, provided a crispy but an insightful reflection on the journey of Uzwaad. He traced the vision of Bishop Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, which led to the birth of this diocesan fortnightly 11 years ago, and how it flourished under the leadership of three dedicated priests:
Rev. Fr. Chetan Capuchin
Rev. Fr. Royston Fernandes
Rev. Fr. Alwyn Sequeira (current editor)
Their collective efforts have transformed Uzwaad into a respected platform for Konkani journalism, literature, and social discourse.
Bishop’s Message of Encouragement:
The Bishop of Udupi, Rt. Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, who celebrated twin Jubilees – 75th Birthday and Silver Jubilee of his Episcopal Ordinations, presided over the event, was deservedly honoured with a traditional shawl, garland, bouquet, and memento. In his presidential address, he commended Fr. Alwyn Sequeira for his tireless dedication, passion, and selfless service to Konkani literature and journalism.
He further appreciated the invaluable support of writers, advertisers, subscribers, and patrons who have contributed to Uzwaad’s success. He urged everyone to promote the fortnightly among their communities, ensuring that Konkani continues to thrive. Congratulating the competition winners, he extended his best wishes to all participants, recognizing their enthusiasm and talent.
A Grand Finale:
Before concluding, Fr. Alwyn Sequeira expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the 11th-anniversary celebration. He acknowledged the collective efforts that made the event truly memorable.
To mark the grand occasion, a special Konkani play, ‘Hang-on’, was performed by the talented artists of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, adding a touch of theatrical brilliance to the celebrations.
The evening concluded on a warm and joyful note, as all guests were invited to a sumptuous dinner, fostering camaraderie and a shared commitment to the Konkani language and culture.
A Testament to Konkani’s Bright Future:
The 11th anniversary of Uzwaad was not just a celebration of its past achievements but a beacon of hope for its future, as the celebrated Emcee of this historical event, who anchored the well organised event with his apt and insightful narratives, Principal Dr Vincent Alva, a Member of Editorial Board, declared, with the unwavering support of its readers, writers, and patrons, Uzwaad continues to be a shining light for Konkani journalism, literature, and cultural heritage.
