Udupi: Felicitations and Stage Programme of Jubilarian Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo
Feb 09, 2025: The grand celebration of Jubilarian Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo on his 75th birthday and Silver Jubilee of Episcopal Ordination was truly a sight to behold—a moment of gratitude, faith, and joy. As the Church prepares to celebrate Jubilee 2025 with the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," this historic evening on 9th February 2025 was a perfect reflection of God’s abundant blessings on His chosen shepherd.
“I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” (Jeremiah 3:15)
As the golden sun set over the Arabian Sea, the Milagres Cathedral Ground came alive with vibrant colors, music, and a spirit of celebration. The native brass band, traditional attires, and colorful umbrellas and banners set the stage for a spectacular welcome procession. The dignitaries were led to the grand dais amidst thunderous applause, a mark of love and reverence for a bishop who has tirelessly served his flock.
The welcome dance by school children, choreographed to lyrics penned by Fr Alwyn Sequeira, was a mesmerizing opening to an evening of reflection and festivity. A well-crafted documentary took the audience through the humble beginnings of Bishop Gerald Lobo, born on 12th November 1949 in Agrar, his seminary formation at Jeppu, and his journey as a young priest serving in Urva, Shirva, and Badyar. His remarkable tenure as the Director of CODP and later as the Bishop of Shimoga was highlighted, showcasing his commitment to the poor, the marginalized, and pastoral renewal.
The faithful watched in awe as the documentary narrated the historic erection of the Udupi Diocese on 12th October 2012 and Bishop Lobo’s visionary leadership over the past 13 years. His tireless efforts in fostering spiritual growth, youth and women empowerment, social development, and the formation of 20 commissions for active lay participation were rightfully recognized. His unwavering faith and trust in God’s providence echoed through every milestone of his journey.
“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:23)
As the audience reflected on these inspiring moments, the stage was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including the Apostolic Nuncio, bishops, clergy, and lay dignitaries. Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves delivered a heartfelt welcome speech, honoring Bishop Lobo’s humility, kindness, and pastoral zeal. In a touching gesture, the Jubilarian garlanded and honored all the bishops present, reflecting his deep gratitude and respect.
The cutting of the Jubilee Cake was a joyful moment, with the Diocesan choir, comprising over 50 members, singing the traditional "Happy Birthday" and a special hymn "Naman Tumka Govllya, Ullas Tumcha Bhaghi Deesak", composed by Fr Alwyn Sequeira. The faithful joined in singing, filling the evening with music and thanksgiving.
Following Holy Mass, the ICYM and YCS youth systematically served cake and soft drinks, as the choir continued with the beautiful hymn "To Kiten Sangta, Te Tumi Kara". The grand felicitation ceremony saw Bishop Lobo being honored with a traditional shawl, garland, fruit basket, memento, and citation, accompanied by the brass band’s triumphant tunes and thunderous applause from the gathered faithful.
A moment of great pride and joy was the arrival of His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, making his first visit to Kallianpur Cathedral. In his message, the Papal Ambassador praised the pastoral mission of Udupi Diocese, which has now been chosen as a model for the Catholic Church in India—a testament to Bishop Lobo’s visionary leadership.
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore, delivered a moving felicitation address, recalling Bishop Lobo’s virtues, simplicity, and unwavering faith in the face of trials. The congregation eagerly awaited the Jubilarian’s speech, and true to his nature, Bishop Lobo humbly credited the faithful for any good he had accomplished, calling himself "just an instrument in God’s hands."
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Mr. Leslie Aroza, Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to making the celebration a grand success. Rev. Fr Denis D’Sa, known for his wit and charm, ensured a smooth and enjoyable flow of the event, while Preetesh D’Sa (Moodubelle) and Jenisha Jarnish (Kemmannu) kept the audience engaged as charismatic hosts.
A true mark of community spirit and gratitude, all Diocesan associations, educational institutions, and social organizations presented bouquets and garlands, offering their respects to the beloved Shepherd of Udupi.
As the night came to a close, the joy of thanksgiving was shared with all, as the organizers distributed meal boxes to the large gathering. With 250 YCS & ICYM volunteers and the dedicated parishioners of Milagres and Mount Rosary Churches, the event was meticulously planned, ensuring seamless coordination of traffic, parking, and hospitality.
It was a celebration of a lifetime, filled with faith, love, and gratitude—an evening that will be cherished for years to come.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.” (Numbers 6:24-25)
