Udupi, December 03: District Collector Dr. K Vidyakumari instructed the officials to make the youth aware of the ill effects of drug use on their health and to stay away from them.
She was presiding over the NCORD (Office of Digital Technology) District Level Coordination Committee meeting held at the District Collector’s office hall of Manipal Rajatadri in the city today.
Generally young people are more addicted to drugs. She said that in addition to conducting regular programs to create awareness about the consequences of their use and future disadvantages in schools and colleges, they should also conduct other activities such as essay competition, elocution competition, etc.
Workers are also victims of mischief. She said that apart from making them aware, they should also be consulted, informed in a way that would appeal to them, and freed from evil.
She said that there is a possibility of growing ganja in the forest area and in some plantations, and the staff of agriculture, horticulture and forest department should carry out continuous observations about these, and drugs may be supplied through post. The postal department staff should open and check the suspicious covers in the presence of the owner. The railway department staff also instructed to monitor the supply of drugs at the station.
The Coastal Police should monitor the sale and transportation of drugs on the beaches, he instructed to take samples of the quality of food sold in the district and send them to experimental schools for analysis.
More than 97 cases of drug consumption have been registered in the district, 90 percent of the cases are under the jurisdiction of Manipal police station. Management of Mahe University should take care of students’ health. In this regard, Mahe instructed the officials that care takers should be assigned more and more awareness programs should be organized for the students to make the environment drug free.
Police officers of Manipal Division should ensure that CCTV is installed in the hostels. All precautionary measures should be taken to control the use of drugs. She said that if they are found to be promoting them, action should be taken against them under the law.
District Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K said that tobacco products are being advertised and sold on the highway signs of the district saying mouth freshener. He said that action should be taken against such people and they should take action to clear the billboards.
Students who are addicted to drugs should first be instructed once or twice and persuaded to correct their mistake. He said that if it continues, he should be removed from the college.
Organized parties on week-ends, there is a possibility of drug consumption in the guise of fun. All suspicious students should undergo medical examination. He advised that such activities should not take place in commercial centers, homestays and other tourist spots.
