Pangla parish emerges winner of 19th Udupi diocesan level Konkani singing competition
Udupi, Oct 28: St John the Evangelist Church, Pangla, claimed its second consecutive championship trophy at the 19th diocese-level Konkani singing competition organized by ICYM Pangla and St John Evangelist Church. The event was held on Sunday, October 27, at St John’s Academy Hall.
Our Lady of Fatima Church, Perampally, and Holy Cross Church, Byndoor, secured the second and third runner-up positions, respectively.
The event began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and a formal unveiling of the trophies.
In his opening address, Fr Dr Prakash Anil Castelino, parish priest of Pangla church, said, “I wish all the best to the participants who have come from across the parishes of the Udupi diocese. I also congratulate the youth of our parish for their hard work in organizing this event.”
Fr Dr Leslie D’Souza, parish priest of Shirva church, added, “Pangla is a renowned parish that has grown exceptionally over the years. It serves as an example for the Udupi diocese. I congratulate ICYM Pangla for their efforts.”
Fr Denis D’Sa, PRO of the Udupi diocese and parish priest of Thottam church, emphasized the importance of humility, noting that successful people often remain grounded by remembering their roots. He urged everyone to honour the places and people who contributed to their growth and development.
Among those present at the inaugural ceremony were Fr Dr Leslie D’Souza, Fr Dr Prakash Anil Castelino, Fr Rolwin Fernandes (assistant parish priest of Pangla), deacon Rohan Mascarenhas, John Martis (vice president, parish pastoral committee), Joseph Castelino (convener of commissions), Anitha D’Souza (convener of ICYM Pangla), Victor Mendonca (convener of youth commission), Godwin Mascarenhas (Udupi diocese ICYM president), and CA Evan Jude D’Souza (ICYM president, Shirva deanery).
Johncy Rodrigues, president of ICYM Pangla, welcomed the gathering, while Anitha D’Souza, convener of ICYM, introduced the judges. Vanet Crasta, secretary of ICYM Pangla, delivered the vote of thanks.
The competition judges included Sandeep Roche, Rony Crasta, and Karen Linet Crasta for the junior category, and Zeena Pereira, Wilson Lasardo, and Roshan Crasta for the senior category.
During the valedictory programme, chief guest Fr Clement Mascarenhas, parish priest of Karkala Town, said, “Today, I am reminded of the late Fr Valerian Mascarenhas, who truly deserves to be here as he contributed immensely to the world of singing. My talent for singing was not innate; I learned it on my journey to priesthood. Here, everyone is talented, though we can’t award everyone. Singing is a rich part of India’s culture, and it’s wonderful to see everyone embrace it. Congratulations to all the winners and participants.”
Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, vicar general of the Udupi Diocese, remarked, “I congratulate everyone who participated in this 19th annual singing competition. This tradition will certainly continue. My gratitude and appreciation go to ICYM Pangla for their efforts. Singing is a gift from God, and it only improves with practice. All who are here today are among the best singers in their communities. Remember, failure is the first step to success.”
The event was attended by dignitaries including Vicar General Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, Fr Clement Mascarenhas, Fr Anil Prakash Castelino, ICYM Udupi director Fr Steevan Fernandes, parish pastoral committee vice president John Martis, ICYM Pangla president Johncy Rodrigues, and secretary Vanet Crasta.
Jenisha Mendonca, cultural secretary of ICYM Pangla, welcomed the gathering, while Jeevan Pereira, treasurer, delivered the vote of thanks. Fr Rolwin, Deacon Rohan, and Clara Mendonca handled the announcements and compering.
