Print Manipal : Historically Devadasis and Tawaifs have significantly contributed to the evolution of music, dance and arts in India, but they are also much misunderstood, said senior art historian Dr Binda Paranjape from Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
It is unfortunate that their profession was devalued in later years. Citing many major names from this tradition, Dr Binda showed that their contribution to music and art are invaluable. But unfortunately, society has a sense of discrimination against them, she regretted. Devadasis and Tawaifs are also part of our composite culture, she added. GCPAS Head Dr Varadesh Hiregange moderated the discussion.
Dr Binda is in town to take part in the Ranjani memorial trust music event.
