Udupi, July 31 : Human trafficking is a very serious issue and the officials of other departments including the police, labor department, women and child development department should work in coordination and ensure that cases do not happen in order to prevent it by creating awareness among the public, K Vidyakumari said.

She was speaking on the occasion of Anti-Human Trafficking Day in collaboration with District Administration, District Panchayat, District Legal Services Authority and Women and Child Development Department Udupi at the Collectorate Hall of Manipal Rajatadri in the city on Tuesday.

The homeless are lured and trafficked for human organs. People who are in poverty are being indulged in such acts by the lure of money. She said that if any cases are found in this regard, the concerned authorities should immediately take appropriate legal action.

Shyamala CK, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department, speaking in introduction, said that human trafficking is a problem that is affecting the society globally. Trafficking is done with the intention of engaging in forced physical exploitation, child labour, begging, domestic exploitation, child marriage, organ harvesting, anti-social activities. She said that this is an organized crime and a large number of women and children are being exploited and it is the responsibility of the government and the department to protect them.

Raju Pujari, Chief Legal Aid Adviser, District Legal Services Authority as Resource Persons said, Human trafficking is the largest illegal activity in the country and is a rapidly growing organized crime. He said that the authorities should strictly follow appropriate legal measures to prevent this.

Joint Director of Industries Department Nagaraj V Naik, District Child Protection Officer Nagaratna Naik, Women and Child Development Department, District Child Protection Unit, Child Helpline, Protection Department, School Education Department, Social Welfare Department, Labor Department, Backward Classes Development Department, Revenue department, the staff of the District Disabled Persons and Senior Citizens Empowerment Department were present.
