Manipal : While catharsis is the central principle of Western theatre, the theory of Rasa is the central notion of Indian theatre said renowned theatre director Prasanna here today.

Talking about his recently revised book Indian Method in Acting at the book release function organised by Gandhian Centre for Philosophical Arts and Sciences and Rangabhumi, Udupi, Prasanna said while acting in Western theatre tries to bring out the essence of the character from inside one’s persona based on catharsis, acting in India centres around learning the qualities of the character from the play based on the theory of Rasa, trying to invoke that Rasa amongst spectators. “This is the fundamental difference between Western and Indian theatre” he felt.

The whole process of theatre is primarily Gandhian as it considers ‘Shrama’(Bread labour) as a valuable value, he added.

Releasing the book writer Prof Phaniraj remarked that the book is a very fine handbook for both theorists and practitioners of theatre. Speaking on the occasion GCPAS Head Prof Varadesh Hiregange said Prasanna’s theory emerges out of his practice of theatre. Rangabhumi director Pradeep Chandra Kutpadi and many other theatre enthusiasts were present on the occasion.
