Udupi, July 05 : District Collector Dr. K. Vidyakumari said that instead of getting treatment for any diseases including dengue, it is a good thing to take necessary precautions to avoid diseases.

She was speaking today in front of the fish market of Varambally Gram Panchayat, Brahmavara to raise awareness about the precautionary measures to be taken to control dengue fever and to launch the campaign to celebrate Dry Day every Friday.

Dengue fever is usually more common during rainy season. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, which usually reproduce by laying eggs in water. Mosquito breeding control should be a priority for all of us. She said that the management of our surrounding environment should be done well.

    Mosquitoes lay eggs and hatch in cement tank, drum, pot, tire, fresh water shells where water is stored. It takes 8 to 11 days to hatch like this. She said that when one day on Friday of the week is observed as a dry day, dengue can be controlled by preventing mosquitoes at the source.

    In every house in urban and rural areas, every Friday of the week without fail, all the cement tanks, barrels, drums, pots etc. that store water inside and outside the house should be emptied simultaneously. They should be rubbed and washed and dried well in the sun for two hours, after which the water should be stored. If the larvae are not dried in this way, they will stick to the inside of the water storage tanks or drums and they will not die. She said that they die only if they are dried well.

    To control dengue, the authorities of all other departments, including the health department, and the public should join hands in mosquito control measures such as the destruction of larvae. People’s representatives should also create awareness among the people. She said that we should keep our surroundings clean by properly disposing of the waste materials produced in our homes on a daily basis.

On this occasion, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. IP Gadad, District Malaria Control Officer Dr. Prashant Bhat, Warambali Gram Panchayat President Nithyananda, Taluk Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ibrahimpura, Health Department staff, Asha workers, public and others were present.
