Udupi: Telling the truth is a very challenging task in today’s society. Journalists must develop the discretion to tell the truth in any stressful situation. It is the responsibility of journalists to maintain such values, said Hariprasad A.,  said Editor-in-Chief of Nukshayana Digital Media.

He delivered a special lecture at the Press Day program organized on Saturday, July 1 at Udupi IMA Bhavan in collaboration with Udupi District Working Journalists Association Rajata Mahotsav Samiti and Udupi Patrika Bhavan Samiti.

India has seen a significant decline in the Global Press Freedom Index this year. India’s position has dropped from 150 to 161. He said that we are behind the neighboring countries in this index. Journalists should not be racist, communalist or corrupt under any circumstances. Making news on the basis of caste and criticizing a person because of a different religion is a big betrayal of the media sector. He said that if he does not get involved in the corruption of journalists, then the journalist in him will become silent.

As a result of politicians investing in media, news today is turning into waves. The journalist in that media tells the negative views of the pro and opposition parties of that party. He said that there will be a system of giving views and giving opinions in the name of news.

A true journalist should develop the mentality and judgment to observe the right and wrong happening in all sectors. We have no ism. All we need is journalism. He said that if it is followed properly, we can face many issues.

It is the main responsibility of journalists and media to keep governments under review at all times. It is also important for journalists to stand up for those in trouble. He said that the biggest challenge facing the journalist is to overcome the pressures in the media sector which is the mirror of the society.

We should never be afraid to tell the truth. If Anji becomes a propagandist of fake news, there is no difference between us and propagators of fake news. It is easy to speak for the system. There is no challenge in that. He said that governments should be assessed and not praised.

The program was inaugurated by Kundapur Sub Divisional Officer Rashmi S.R. In her inaugural address she said that the media provides a perspective on the vicissitudes of society that the ruling class does not see. If the media and the ruling class work together, it will be possible to strive for the prosperity of the society. He said that if the power in the pen is used properly, a better society can be built.

Udupi District Working Journalist’s Association President Rajesh Shetty Alevoor presided. Karnataka Folk Parishad Udupi District President Dr. Talluru Shivaram Shetty, Karnataka Working Journalists Association Vice President Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa spoke as the chief guests.

On this occasion, Radhakrishna Thodikana, a senior journalist from Karkala, was given the honor of Press Day. Indian Federation of Working Journalists National Committee Member Arun Kumar Shiruru, Karnataka Working Journalists Association State Committee Member Kiran Manjanbailu, Udupi Patrika Bhavan Convener Ajith Haradi, Silver Jubilee Committee General Secretary Jayakara Suvarna were present.

Nazir Polya, general secretary of the association, welcomed the gathering. Silver Jubilee Committee Convener Muhammad Sharif spoke in introduction. Treasurer Umesh Marpalli delivered  the vote of thanks. Journalist Rakesh Kunjur compared the program
