Manipal : 16th Annual conference of Orthopaedic Association of South Indian States (OASISCON 2017, Manipal) began at the Dr TMA Pai hall of Kasturba Medical College here on Friday with three live surgeries of joint replacements. The patients were suffering from either severe pain in the joint or had lost the ability to move their limb. Joint replacements of shoulder, knee and hips were done.

Later in the day, there was a workshop on bones using artificial bones. Fractures were created in the artificial bones, and implants were used to fix the fractures. Resource persons from abroad and other parts of the country demonstrated the use of implants with the help of sophisticated instruments to fix the distal radius, proximal tibia, distal femur and foot and ankle fractures. Delegates practiced it on saw bones.

The Conference was formally inaugurated by Pro Chancellor, Dr HS Ballal at the same venue after the first day’s workshop. Dr H S Ballal said that ” the medical fraternity should take lead -  in making the technological advancements in the field of Orthopaedic surgery  - affordable to the people; else it would not be offering any benefit to the common man.” Dr Poornima Baliga Pro Vice Chancellor Manipal University was the Guest of Honour.

Saturday began with orations. Dr. Hanumath Rao gave an oration on ssteoporotic fractures. This was followed by a talk on “expedition to the Everest” by the first doctor who climbed the Everest – Dr. Murad E Lala. The difficulties encountered and safe methods to climb were discussed. Dr. A A Shetty from the UK explained the developments in stem cell therapy and how well it could be used to prolong the life of a joint. He also talked about the gene therapy which was an emerging field in Orthopaedics to prevent diseases at an early stage.

This was followed by a talk on acetabular fracture by Dr. Govardhan from Chennai. The forenoon ended with a brief on printing technology in health sciences. Mr. Abhay Gupte from Manipal Media Networks talked on use of electronic printing the orthopaedic field and how it benefitted patients.

There were interactive sessions on various specialty fields of Orthopaedics – Paediatric orthopaedic, hand surgery, joint replacement, trauma, arthroscopy etc. Experts in the field from India and abroad showed the different examples of difficult scenarios encountered during their practice and discussed the best way to treat them with the delegates and panel.
