Manipal : Osteoporosis is a silent condition where the bone becomes thin and fragile leading to fractures.  The disease occurs when either the body fails to form new bones or there is increased destruction of the old bones. Osteoporosis is seen in majority of fractures occurring in old age. Approximately 35 million people suffer from osteoporosis in India without realizing that every osteoporosis-related bone fracture doubles the risk of death. The disease is most common in postmenopausal women, but it remains largely undiagnosed due to lack of information about the condition said Dr. Rajaram Pai, Head, Department of Orthopedics’, Dr. T.M.A. Pai Hospital, Udupi.

Osteoporosis, said Dr Rajaram Pai, can be diagnosed by non-invasive technique called Bone Mineral Density and subsequently advice regarding management for the same is given. The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test can diagnose osteoporosis when patients do not display any overt symptoms. Ladies, especially above the age of 50 is required to undergo the BMD Test to evaluate the density of their bones.
