Class VI Student Writes to Karnataka CM After Spotting Life-Threatening Pothole in Udupi - Inspired by Bharat Scouts & Guides leadership training, young student flags major public safety hazard
In a remarkable example of civic responsibility and youth leadership, Master Deepen Deepak Shenoy, a Class VI student of Mukunda Kripa School, Udupi, +91 94810 19567 (A unit of the Academy of General education, Manipal) has written directly to the Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka highlighting a dangerous pothole that poses a serious threat to public safety.
The pothole is located near a small bridge on the road connecting Diana Theatre to MGM Budnar Road, a route frequently used by school children, senior citizens, morning walkers, two-wheelers, cars, and public buses. With no barricades or warning signs in place, the open and deep pothole presents an immediate risk of accidents and potential loss of life.
Master Deepen, who is an active member of the Bharat Scouts & Guides, Udupi Wing, noticed the hazard while returning from school. Recently having attended a District Leadership Training Camp, he felt morally compelled to act in accordance with the Scout motto “Be Prepared” and the movement’s principles of duty to society.
Without seeking any personal publicity or benefit, the young student documented the issue with photographs and submitted a formal representation to the Chief Minister, urging immediate intervention by the concerned authorities.
Local residents have welcomed the initiative, stating that the condition of the road had been a long-standing concern. Master Deepen’s action has drawn attention to the critical role young citizens can play in safeguarding their communities when guided by values, awareness, and leadership training.
The incident stands as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to responsible citizenship, and that proactive youth engagement can help prevent tragedies before they occur.
