Dr Ronald Colaco urges Karnataka govt to fulfil poll pledge of separate ministry for NRI Kannadigas

Dubai, Nov 8: Prominent NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr Ronald Colaco has urged the Karnataka Government to honour its election-time “guarantee” of creating a dedicated ministry for non-resident Kannadigas (NRKs), questioning the delay in implementing the promise.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony held at Hotel Grand Hyatt, Dubai, to honour Dr Arathi Krishna on her election as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC), Dr Colaco said the government must act swiftly to deliver on its commitment to the global Kannada community.

The event, attended by representatives of over 36 Kannada organisations from across the UAE, was organised under the leadership of KNRI president Praveen Kumar Shetty, BCCI president Hidayath Adduru, and Karnataka Sangha Dubai president Shashidhar Nagarajappa.

Recalling the Congress party’ s pre-election manifesto, Dr Colaco noted that it had explicitly promised a separate ministry for Kannadigas living abroad.“The Congress came to power on the strength of several guarantees. Yet, despite being in office for quite some time now, this particular promise remains unfulfilled. How long must Kannadigas overseas continue to wait?” he questioned.

He observed that while the NRI Forum Karnataka, currently headed by Dr Arathi Krishna, has been working for the cause, it operates with limited powers and insufficient budgetary support.“The state must emulate Kerala’s example by setting up a proper ministry dedicated to its diaspora. Only then can it effectively address the problems, hardships and welfare of Non-Resident Kannadigas,” Dr Colaco asserted.

He urged the community to act collectively:“We cannot remain passive any longer. All Kannadigas abroad should unite to demand action. I am ready to join a delegation that will soon meet the chief minister and deputy chief minister to press for the immediate establishment of this ministry.”

Dr Colaco also appealed to all Kannada associations in the UAE to work together in celebrating key national and cultural occasions such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and Kannada Rajyotsava. “Such joint celebrations will strengthen our unity, friendship, and mutual trust,” he said, adding that solidarity was the community’s greatest strength.

Demonstrating his continued commitment to the welfare of Kannadigas abroad, Dr Colaco announced a donation of Rs 5 crore towards the establishment of a “Kannada Bhavan” in the UAE — a proposed cultural and community hub for Kannadigas.

Praveen Kumar Shetty also came forward with a Rs 2.5 crore contribution for the same cause. “The Kannada Bhavan will serve as a unifying space for every Kannadiga in the UAE — a symbol of our heritage and identity,” Dr Colaco remarked.
Congratulating Dr Arathi Krishna on her new role in the Legislative Council, Dr Colaco lauded her relentless commitment to the welfare of the global Kannada community. “Dr Arathi has always been a strong, compassionate voice for Kannadigas everywhere. Her service is exemplary and deeply appreciated,” he said.

In her response, Dr Arathi Krishna expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue championing the cause of non-resident Kannadigas. “I will continue to be a voice for our community and ensure that government support reaches every Kannadiga abroad,  she affirmed.

Dr U T Iftikhar Ali, president of the Karnataka Allied and Health Care Council, who attended as a guest of honour, promised full cooperation for the Kannada Bhavan project.

He praised the leadership of Praveen Kumar Shetty, Thumbe Moiyidin, and Dr Ronald Colaco, describing them as the “Amar–Akbar–Anthony of the UAE’s Kannada fraternity” for their role in promoting communal harmony and unity.

Dr B K Yusuf, president of Dubai BCF, also congratulated Dr Arathi Krishna and extended his best wishes.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of numerous Kannada organisations. Hidayath Adduru delivered the welcome address, and Shashidhar Nagarajappa compered the programme.

ಮುಂಬಯಿ (ಆರ್‌ಬಿಐ), ನ.೦೮:  ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗಾಗಿ (ಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ) ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಇಲಾಖೆಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುವ ಕುರಿತು ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ಗ್ಯಾರಂಟಿಯನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸಿ, ಆ ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ಜಾರಿಗೆ ತರಲು ವಿಳಂಬ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅನಿವಾಸಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ (ಗಲ್ಫ್) ದುಬಾಯಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊಡುಗೈದಾನಿ ಡಾ| ರೊನಾಲ್ಡ್ ಕೋಲಾಸೊ  ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿದರು.

ಅನಿವಾಸಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಮಿತಿ (ಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ ಫೋರಂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ) ಇದರ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷೆ ಆಗಿದ್ದು, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ವಿಧಾನ ಪರಿಷತ್ತ್‌ನ ಸದಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದ ಡಾ| ಆರತಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕಳೆದ ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ ದುಬಾಯಿಯ ಹೋಟೆಲ್ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಹಯತ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸನ್ಮಾನ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಡಾ| ರೊನಾಲ್ಡ್ ಕೋಲಾಸೊ, ಸರಕಾರವು ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ತ್ವರಿತವಾಗಿ ಈಡೇರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿದರು. ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಘೋಷಣಾಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಮೆಲುಕು ಹಾಕಿದ್ದು, ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವ ಭರವಸೆ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ನೀಡಿತ್ತು. ಹಲವು ಭರವಸೆಗಳ ಆಧಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ವಿಶೇಷ ಭರವಸೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಈಡೇರಿಲ್ಲ. ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಇನ್ನೆಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ ಕಾಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿದರು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಡಾ| ಆರತಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಅವರ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ ಫೋರಂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದರ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಜೆಟ್ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದರು. ರಾಜ್ಯವು ಕೇರಳದ ಮಾದರಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಲಸೆ ಜನಾಂಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಬೇಕು. ಆಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ, ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣದ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ ಎಂದೂ ಡಾ| ಕೋಲಾಸೊ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಪಟ್ಟರು.

ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಅಲೈಡ್ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಲ್ತ್ ಕೇರ್ ಕೌನ್ಸಿಲ್ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಡಾ| ಯು.ಟಿ ಇಫ್ತಿಖಾರ್ ಅಲಿ ಗೌರವ ಅತಿಥಿsಯಾಗಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ, ಯುಎಇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭವನ ಯೋಜನೆಗೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಹಕಾರ ನೀಡುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರವೀಣ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ವಕ್ವಾಡಿ, ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಯುಎಇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭವನದ ಉದ್ದೇಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ರೂಪಾಯಿ ೨.೫ ಕೋಟಿ ದೇಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಘೋಷಿಸಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಭವನವು ಯುಎಇಯ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗನಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಏಕತೆಯ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಲಿ ಎಂದು ಆಶಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು.

ಆರತಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಗೌರವಕ್ಕೆ ಹೃತ್ಪೂರ್ವಕ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳನ್ನಿತ್ತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಅಬಿವಂದನೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ, ನಾನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಯುವಂತೆ ವಿದೇಶದ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗುತ್ತೇನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗನಿಗೂ ತಲುಪುವಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.

ಬಿಸಿಸಿಐ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಹಿದಾಯತ್ ಅಡ್ಡೂರು ಹಾಗೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಘ ದುಬಾಯಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಶಶಿಧರ್ ನಾಗರಾಜಪ್ಪ, ಕೆಎನ್‌ಆರ್‌ಐ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರವೀಣ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ವಕ್ವಾಡಿ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ದುಬಾಯಿ ಬಿಸಿಎಫ್ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಡಾ| ಬಿ.ಕೆ.ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಯುಎಇಯ ವಿವಿಧ ೩೬ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಗಳು ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತರಿದ್ದು ಡಾ| ಆರತಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸಿದರು.
