Kundapura: A cancer awareness and free screening program

A cancer awareness and free screening program for breast, cervical, and oral cancer, as well as diabetes and Hypertension, was organized at Ayushman Arogya Mandir, Koni, Basrooru, Kundapura,  This event was jointly organized by the Manaswini Sanjeevini Grama Panchayath Society, Grama Panchayath, Koni; Basrooru Vyavasaaya Seva Sahakaari Sangha, Basrooru; Rotary Club, Koteshwara; Aans Club, Koteshwara; Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, MAHE; and Primary Health Center, Basrooru.

The event began with a brief inaugural program. The program was presided over by Mrs. Nagarathna Shetty, President of Manaswini Grama Panchayath Society, Koni. Mr. Ganapathi Shet, President, Grama Panchayath, Koni. The resource person for the event was Dr. Akhila D., Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, KMC, MAHE, and Manipal.

Following the inauguration, Dr. Akhila D. delivered a detailed awareness talk on breast and cervical cancer. She explained how cancer develops, as well as the signs and symptoms of cancer. The importance of self-breast examination, Pap smear test, the recommended frequency for screening, regular check-ups for early detection, and timely treatment was highlighted, noting that cancer can often be cured if detected in its early stages through screening. Late-stage detection, however, poses significant challenges in treatment.

The camp was attended by a total of 77 beneficiaries, including 36 Pap smears and 44 Clinical Breast Examinations, out of which three were referred. The event was well-received by the Koni people.
