Surathkal Toll gate to be shifted to New Mangalore Port,says MP Nalin Kumar Kateel

MANGALURU: The toll gate on the National Highway 66 at Surathkal will be shifted to the New Mangalore Port and the toll will be collected only

from those vehicles that enter and exit from the port, stated a press release from the office of Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

“Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari convened a meeting to discuss about the toll gate at Surathkal with MP Nalin Kumar

Kateel and officials at the Transport Bhavan in New Delhi today (Tuesday). The meeting mainly discussed about the shifting/ merger of the Surathkal

toll gate. It has been decided that the toll gate, which is posing a lot of inconveniences to people, will be shifted to the premises of New

Mangalore Port. The minister has directed that toll should be collected from those vehicles that enter and exit the port only,” the release stated.

The minister also directed officials to upgrade Mani – Sampaje road on the Madikeri route into fourlane. Similarly, the minister

also directed officials to widen the road stretch from Sampaje to Madikeri.

Meanwhile, a padayatra scheduled to be held on Monday by various organisations from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts

led by the Action Committee Against Surathkal Toll Gate has been postponed in the wake of prohibitory orders imposed in the

district.

The action committee had planned a padayatra from Hejmady toll gate to Surathkal toll gate on the NH 66 demanding the

closure of toll plaza at Surathkal.

Action committee convener Muneer Katipalla said that the padayatra will be held on March 22.

On the MP’s statements regarding the shifting of the toll gate to the port, Katipalla said, “our fight will continue till an order in

this regard is issued by the government.”

Mangaluru MLA U T Khader said, "We have heard several such promises regarding Surathkal toll gate earlier. Let the ministry of

road transport and highways issue an order on shifting the toll gate from Surathkal.
