Sudden rains bring down mercury in Mumbai

A bout of sudden thundershowers – lasting for nearly 30 minutes – caught Mumbaikars unawares on Friday evening.
However, the downpour managed to push the soaring mercury southwards in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region – giving relief from the sweltering October-heat. According to weathermen, such brief thundershowers are likely to continue over the weekend.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD, the Colaba observatory recorded maximum of 34.7 degree Celsius, while the Santacruz centre recorded 32.8 degree Celsius. The relative humidity recorded at Colaba and Santacruz was 92 per cent and 68 per cent, respectively.
In fact, since 30 September, Mumbai has not even recorded a single drop of rain. Due to the absence of these rainfall activities over the maximum city, the both the maximum as well as minimum temperatures have also witnessed a steep rise. So much so that the maximum has been reaching even 35 degrees with the minimums settling above the 30-degree mark.
“ Mumbai is expected to witness some relief in terms of rain. Rain Gods are expected to bestow some kindness on the residents of the maximum city,” according to Skymet Weather.
These weather conditions will be attributed to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over east-central Arabian Sea which is likely to move in a northwestward direction.
