Mumbai, July 18:The Kannada Kavya  Programme was held at WRIC building, Culina Campus, Santacruz(E) on Thursday by the Kannada Department of Mumbai University. Dr Purnima S Shetty evaluated the research novel ‘Mumbai Kannadigara Siddi Sadhanegalu’. Afterwards, Dr G M Hegde honored Dr. Poornima Sudhakar Shetty with the doctorate degree. Dr G M Hegde, renowned critic from Dharwad said, “The service of Kannada Department of Mumbai University is unique and awesome in protecting the contributions of Kannada. The service of outside Kannadigas make me feel proud. The poetry readers are becoming less day by day. Many poetry compilations are being published; still people lose interest in poetry. So, we all should love poetry. There is a need to cultivate love for poetry.

During the “special speech” and Kannada Kavya Meemanse programme Dr Hegde said, “ There are approximately 20 lakhs Kannadigas in Mumbai. The life of Mumbai Kannadigas, their achievements are commendable. Western culture destroys local culture. But in Mumbai local culture is reviving because of these Kannadigas. The subject chosen for PhD research by Dr Poornima Shetty is really praiseworthy. She has provided details of various communities and associations their achievements with statistics. PhD is a certificate of hardwork. I felt bad when I heard that the Kannada Department here is in a miserable condition. We assure that we all support Kannada Department of Mumbai University at all the times.”

Programme ‘Kavi Samaya’ was held under the president ship of Dr. G N Upadhya-HOD Kannada, Mumbai University. G P Kusuma, Srinivasa Jokatte, Anita Poojary read out their poetries. Afterwards, Prakash P Bhandary, the founder of Chinnara Bimba who was promoted as an additional joint commissioner of Maharashtra Police dept was felicitated in the programme.

G N Upadhya in his presidential address said, “The feel you get from poetry is a special one. It unites mind and heart. Literary works are going well in Mumbai. “

Lata Jayarama Shetty-the president of Bunt’s assn, women’s wing Mumbai, Aikala Gunapala Shetty-executive president of reginal committee Bandra, Andheri, Sujata Gunapal Shettty-president of women’s wing, H B L Rao, Dr. Vishwanath Karnad, B S Kurkal, Lata Jayarama Shetty, Petemane Prakash Shetty, Sa. Daya, S K Sundar, Madhusoodhan Rao, Dakshayini Hadahalli, Bailuru Balakrishna Rao, Dr. Karunakar Shetty, Surekha Devadiga, Dr. Mamata Rao, Ramesh D Rai, Venugopal Shetty, Dr G V Kulakarni, Petri Vishwanatha Shetty, G T Acharya and other dignitaries were present during the programme. Dr Poornima Shetty –research asst of Kannada Dept welcomed all. Dr. Jyoti Satish presented the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
