Dubai: A car bomb exploded late on Thursday at a security checkpoint in the Saudi capital Riyadh, killing the driver and wounding two policemen, the interior ministry said.
The interior ministry said that the bomber blew himself up around the time of sunset prayers, as Saudis were ending the last fast of Ramadan this year, according to Saudi news site Sabq. It was not clear where the bomber was heading.
The militant deployed the explosives in the car he was driving when he was asked to stop at a police check point upon raising suspicion on Al Ha’er road in Riyadh.
The policemen were taken to hospital and were in a “stable condition”, a spokesman for the ministry said, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.
Eid was declared in Saudi Arabia on Friday, as well as all other Gulf Cooperation Council states with the exception of Oman.
Saudi Arabia has been under a security alert after Saudi militants belonging to the Daesh terror group blew up two Shiite mosques in the Eastern Province of the country, and one in Kuwait. All three bombs were detonated by suicide bombers during Friday prayers, killing scores of worshippers.
