Mumbai: Governor calls for creating apprenticeship positions in Pvt sector and Govt organisations

The Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao today called for creating a large number of apprenticeship positions in all government and private sector organizations. Observing that India has only 2.5 lakh apprenticeship positions, he said, apprenticeship positions will help youths to pick up critical employment skills through hands-on approach.

The Governor was speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Kaushal Mela’ (Skill Fair) on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day in Mumbai on Wednesday (15 July).

The Kaushal Mela was organized by Kohinoor Technical Institute to generate awareness about the Prime Minister’s Skill India programme. Founder of Kohinoor and former Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, Mayor Snehal Ambekar, captains of industry and Chairman of Kohinoor Unmesh Joshi were present.

 Speaking on the occasion, the Governor observed that skill development will not only insulate India from the adverse impact of slowdown, but will also help the country achieve the goal of financial inclusion and empowerment.

The Governor pointed out that compared to China which has a skilled workforce of 45 per cent, India has only 2 to 3 percent of skilled workforce.  Observing that almost 75 percent of rural population of India is engaged in casual manual labour in absence of any skills, the Governor said, providing skills to this population will make them contributors to the economy of the country.

Founder of Kohinoor Manohar Joshi recalled that he had started a Self Employment and Employment Scheme in Maharashtra when he was Chief Minister of the State.  He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking up skill development as a national programme. Joshi expressed the confidence that Maharashtra will provide leadership to the nation in skill development.
