Rajveer Singh, who tried to commit suicide with his lover near Taj Mahal
Agra: A young man and woman slit each other’s throats near the Taj Mahal in Agra, in a lovers’ pact allegedly driven by their families’ objection to their interfaith relationship.
Rajveer Singh and Shabana survived, and are currently in hospital with heavy bandages around their throats.
The two grew up together. After Rajveer’s family moved to Dehradun in Uttaranchal, the two friends apparently fell in love.
Shabana’s family, which is Muslim, objected to her relationship with a Hindu boy and forced her to leave him, but they secretly stayed in touch.
On Wednesday, Rajveer came to Agra and called Shabana, who teaches dance in an academy. She went to meet him at the Taj Nature Walk, metres away from the world renowned monument.
Moments later, forest personnel found the two lying in blood.
At the hospital, only Rajveer was conscious and he told the whole story to the police.
He told the police that they had tried every possible way of getting together but had failed to convince their parents.
