Nepal quake: 34 aftershocks in two days
There were 34 aftershocks in the two days since the massive earthquake in Nepal occurred on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences informed on Sunday. The last of the aftershocks, reported at 12:39 pm on Sunday, was the most severe one of all aftershocks at 6.9 magnitude.
“Officials suggest precautions be taken to remain protected due to such weather and also due to possibility of landslides at vulnerable sites. ”
IMD’s Weather Forecasting Center has also predicted fairly widespread rain or thundershower activity over Nepal during the next 24 hours, an official release informed. The activity is most likely to become widespread on April 27 and 28 with possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorm activity, particularly over eastern part of Nepal. Similar weather is also predicted for Kathmandu.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim would also experience fairly widespread rain or thundershower activity during next three days with possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorm. Scattered thunderstorm activity over Bihar and isolated over East Uttar Pradesh would also occur during next two to three days.
Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan advised people to keep calm and reassure others and not to spread rumours, in a separate statement here on Sunday. He urged people to believe in reports based only on government advisories on earthquakes.
The IMD, which has been regularly monitoring seismic activity in the region, issued the following advisory on Sunday as more aftershocks are likely to strike.
