Urwa Church to mark finale of 150th-year celebration on May

The Immaculate Conception Church which celebrated its post-centenary golden jubilee at Urwa in Mangaluru
The church, started in 1865, has seen 39 parish priests and 39 assistant parish priests in the past 150-years.
The Immaculate Conception Church at Urwa, Lady Hill, will celebrate the finale of the celebration of completing 150 years at the church ground on May 1.
Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangaluru, had inaugurated the post-centenary golden jubilee celebration on March 30, 2014.
Victor D’Mello, parish priest, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the Bishop will inaugurate and bless the newly built belfry and the grotto on May 1 at 4.30 p.m. He will be the chief celebrant of the Thanksgiving Eucharist.
Francis D’Souza, Bishop of Shivamogga, will render the homily. Bishops of Shivamogga, Kalaburagi, Ajmer, religious and laity leaders will attend. He said that the church, started in 1865, has seen 39 parish priests and 39 assistant parish priests in the past 150-years. The church now caters to the religious needs of 640 Christian families.
Some families that were part of the Urwa parish got attached to the Bejai parish in 1912. The parish saw more reorganization with the setting up of Derebail parish in 1939 and the Ashoknagar parish in 1971, he said.
Mr. D’Mello said Eucharistic celebration that has been going on in the church would continue up to April 30.
The church has been dedicating one day each month since April 2014 for the well-being of sections of society by conducting special prayers for them.
