Mangaluru/Udupi: Everyone knows about the coastal district’s fascination for gold. But, on April 21, the Tuluvas’ love for gold was quantified as it is said that on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed gold purchases of over 400 kgs. The purchases this year is about 20 per cent higher than last year.
While Udupi city witnessed 60 kgs of gold purchases on Tuesday, as against 50 kg purchases recorded last year, Udupi district saw gold business of 100 kgs.
In Mangaluru, gold purchases were recorded at 150 kg while entire Dakshina Kannada witnessed sales of 300 kgs.
However, as per sources, the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada could not compete with Kasargod district of Kerala where gold sales on one day is estimated to have reached 600 kgs.
A gram of gold cost Rs 2,520 on Tuesday as per this, the entire turn over of one day is estimated at Rs 120 crore.
