Mangaluru / Udupi: Unions of state-owned telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) started their two-day strike from Tuesday, April 21 across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi protesting against government for not taking concrete action to revive the loss making company.
 
The main BSNL offices in Mangaluru, Udupi, Belthangady and Sullia remained closed on Tuesday. Though the telecom service and internet has not been hit by the strike, the consumers will be impacted only in case there are major issues like cable cut or other issues where manpower is required.
 
In a recently press meet held in the city, the Mangaluru union had stated that the BSNL has been running under loss to meet government’s commitment.
 
"The BSNL has been suffering losses since 2009 because of the Centre’s pro-private sector policy and the company was not allowed to expand its mobile network for almost six to seven years" complained the members adding that the employees are committed to the Company and hence ’Save BSNL Build Nation’ programme has been initiated by the Union to ensure that the BSNL does not see its end.
 
The members have urged for upgrade of the equipment to offer best services to users and also for adopting new technologies such as 4G, compensation to the company as it is providing rural telephone services at loss, financial assistance for its expansion, all Central and state PSUs should use BSNL service only, merging of sick companies with BSNL and rejection of TRAI recommendation for surrendering 1.2 MHz spectrum.
