Mangaluru: Jeevan Vijay Fernandes, a 24-year-old youth from Beloor in Bantwal who died in a road mishap will still live on. Surprising, but true, Jeevan’s liver will be transplanted, thereby scripting history.

The procedure of transplanting the liver took place on Monday night in Mangaluru and the same will be taken to Bengaluru and for this the traffic in the city was brought to a complete halt on Monday night.

A team from Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCKT) from Bengaluru arrived in the city by special flight and along with two surgeons from AJ Hospital, conducted the procedure at AJ Hospital where Jeevan was admitted. The organs will be taken by special flight to Bengaluru and then to BGS Global Hospital. The target here is to reach the liver to BGS Global Hospital in 45 minutes. The liver will be then placed in a special solution and transplanted to another patient.

The traffic from Mangaluru to Bajpe Airport was brought to a standstill to make way for the scripting of the history. The liver will be flown to Bengaluru and from there it will be taken via special flight.

Jeevan, a salesman of spare parts for automobile had met with an accident near Adyar on Friday night. After battling for life for over two days in the hospital, the doctors declared his brain dead.
 However, in a rare gesture, Jeevan’s family came forward and decided to donate all his vital organs, as desired by Jeevan. As per Jeevan’s family members, Jeevan wanted to donate his heart, kidney and eyes.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Sudheesh Rao, ICU specialist at AJ Hospital, said that the initiative has been taken by AJ Hospital. In Jeevan’s case his brain was dead but his heart, liver and kidney were functional, which could be used for other patients.

While the result of the transplantation is to be waited and watched for, Jeevan has certainly scripted history even in his death.
