Mumbai Women’s International Film Festival (MWIFF) celebrates the achievement of women filmmakers

Mumbai Women’s International Film Festival (MWIFF) organized by Oculus Creations which concluded on 13th December 2014 at Liberty cinema, Marine Lines celebrated the work of women filmmakers for 8-days. The festival was fun filled fair with over 152 films and interactive sessions from filmmakers all over the globe.

The festival juries Manisha Korde, Nupur Ashthana, Devika Bhagat, Deepa Bhatia, Shivendra Shingh Dungarpur and Olivier Delahaye made sure that the deserving films and filmmakers grab the award.  The Opening film, ‘Grand Seduction’ bagged two awards for Best Feature film and Best Direction award.

Irene Loebell who won the ‘Special Mention Award’ for the film ‘Life in Progress’ said she’s pleased that she won the award and unfortunately she couldn’t make it to the ceremony. The Best short film Award was given to the film ‘Safar’ by Pratyusha Gupta and The best Short Documentary was won Megha Ramaswamy. Megha while receiving the award said she’s happy that her film has won the award and that the film deals with acid attackers, she’s trying to spread the awareness and reach out to many people by distributing her film to festivals.

Also at the festival, Sunil Grover popularly known as Gutthi from ’Comedy Nights with Kapil’ was spotted for his film ’Kajariya’! Marathi film producer Meghna Jadhav and actress Veena Jamkar had come for the screening of their film ’Mitraa’ and Mrunal Thakur actress of TV serial ’Kumkum Bhagya’ was seen during the screening of her film ’Vitti Dandu’.

Furthermore,The MWIFF Excellence Award which celebrates the achievement of remarkable women who inspire others around them was given to Charun Khurana, who fought for the 60 year old ban of the film industry which exempted women to work as a makeup artists.  The award was also given to Namrata Rao as an editor and Amrita Mahal as a Production Designer.

In all a total of  44 awards were given at the Closing ceremony of MWIFF 2014. “We were happy to see the response we got from the filmmakers. It was encouragement for me and my team that our work was being recognized. We will try to reach out to more filmmakers in the next edition and showcase more quality films”, said the festival director, Avinash Pawar.
