Udupi : Fraudsters take away Rs 1.13 cr from NRI’s Syndicate Bank Manipal branch Account

Print Udupi : In a rather filmy style of theft, an NRI lost Rs 1.13 cr from his Foreign Currency (Non Resident) Account (FCNR) of Syndicate Bank after hackers made way into his personal e-mail ID.
Louis D’Souza, hailing from Udupi is a resident of Canada and he holds an FCNR Account with Syndicate Bank Manipal branch. D’Souza’s account was credited with $2,23,830.20 from Katpady Canara Bank and from ICICI bank.
As per a message received by the Bank from D’Souza’s gmail account, a sum of $1,15,000 was asked to be transferred to Dubai National Bank on Jan 15, 2014 and $70,000 into Islamic National Bank, Abu Dhabi on October 27. Further, in November another $61,000 was credited into his account from Corporation Kurkal branch. The bank then received a mail stating that the entire amount must be sent to Hong Kong branch of Bank of China.
However, growing suspicious, Assistant General Manager Ramesh Nayak contacted D’Souza asking him about the mails. To his surprise, D’Souza was not aware of any such mails sent by him to the bank.
It was then learnt that some miscreants who had gained entry into D’Souza’s e-mail account were sending fake mails by forging his signature. In this manner, the miscreants have taken away Rs 1.13 cr so far.
A case has been registered with Manipal police by Ramesh Nayak, the AGM of the Bank.
