Distressed woman rescued by social worker; Efforts on to locate her family
Udupi : A 21-year-old girl who was raped and harassed constantly by unidentified men was rescued by social workers in a rather miserable and distraught state from Udupi.
While the social workers could only get to know the name of the girl, they are struggling to locate the whereabouts of the girl who in an attempt to change her unchanging reality has taken to alcohol and other intoxication.
"I have been subjected to rape and I have taken to drinking to forget my miseries," was the statement made by the battered 21-year-old girl who was found by social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalpady on November 13.
Addressing the press persons here on Sunday, November 15, Vishu said that when they found the girl she was begging for food. She was later admitted to a hospital, where she revealed about rape and atrocities meted out at her.
"She was able to tell her name. However we have been able to find out that she belongs to Kasargod. The Udupi Police who have recorded the statement have now informed the Kasargod police," he added.
Irked by the negligent attitude of the women helpline run by women and child welfare department who did not respond to their call, Vishu Shetty said when the locals came to rescue the girl, the helpline failed in its duty.
"When such is the case how can we be sure of the department reaching out to women in distress," he questioned.
Possibilities are high that the lady was first intoxicated and then sexually abused. Though she has told that she is from Kasargod, we have to the confirm the same and find her parents. Once that is done we will fight for justice, Vishu Shetty said.
Whenever locals reach out to such women the helpline and police department should provide required support, he added.
Rickshaw driver Sanil, Sundar Shetty Kappettu and Manikanta who had helped the girl were present.
