Special Courts to deal with offences under POCSO Act

Mangaluru : Special Courts will be setup in all districts of Karnataka to deal with cases under  POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act). Two Fast Track Courts are already rendering such service in Bengaluru, informed State Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights T B Jayachandra.

Divulging details about the statistics on POCSO Act to presspersons on Tuesday, November 11 at the Mangaluru branch of Congress party office, he said as many as 1,286 cases being registered, 281 cases were disposed and over a 1,000 cases are still pending. The cases under POCSO Act will be solved within a year, however several cases have been pending from the past two years. “Witnesses turning hostile is the main reason for all the cases to be stacked,” he added further.

Around 400 cases were registered from Bengaluru alone.  A total of 59 cases have been reported from Dakshina Kannada.

“The Central Government has made IPC Section 376 (Punishment for rape) more rigid after the Nirbhaya Case two years ago,” he said.

Also, the Supreme Court has ruled that rape victims’ statement to be directly recorded by a judicial magistrate instead of police officials to cut short protracted proceedings.

About creating awareness among the public especially youth, he said that the Information Department was already directed to telecast advertisements against child and other sexual harassments on television.

Ban on tobacco

Responding to queries on ban on tobacco the Minister said, “The case is in Supreme Court. We have appointed a special Public Prosecutor. We are awaiting the verdict. However, the farmers need not worry. We will ensure that remedial measures are taken if the verdict does not come in their favour.”
He said Karnataka was a major provider of tobacco with Dakshina Kannada district alone accounting to about 40 per cent of the produce to the state and the State Government is doing its best to protest the interest of the farmers.

With regards to questions on illegal sand mining and issues with the Endowment Department, Jayachandra said that he will come back to Mangaluru again to discuss the issue in detail with the functionaries concerned.
