MANGALURU: There’s no denying that CCTVs have become an integral part of life in almost all institutions with heightened state of security and safety. However, the KSRTC Bus Stand at Bejai here has not taken any steps to replace the seven CCTVs even after a year it was found to be defunct. Although KSRTC security and vigilance have brought this to the notice of the higher authorities at Bangalore, things have not changed.

Even Mangalore city police had sent letters, asking them to rectify the system, said a KSRTC official. "These letters have been forwarded to our central office. The cops had come to trace a criminal, who they believed took a bus from our Bejai bus stand. When they found out that our system was not working, they wrote to us and we have forwarded it to our central office,’’ said the KSRTC official.

The seven CCTVs were installed in 2007. Two years back, the hard disk failed, which means that the system did not record any activity. The system was installed by a Mangalore-based firm and the service was also not satisfactory after the first year warranty. Now the CCTVs also are defunct.

KSRTC officials said that they need at least 12 CCTVs to monitor all passenger and vehicle entry and exit points. Even Udupi and Kundapur bus stand does not have CCTVs. "It’s the responsibility of the stores department, which is sitting on our communication for the last few months. Though we have a security personnel, people do not care. A few days back, when security personnel tried to take an inebriated person out of the bus stand, public took his side and did not support us. In such a situation, CCTVs can comes to our rescue," the officials added.

Meanwhile, KSRTC here gets a daily average passenger traffic of 5,500. MC Lingaraju, chief security and vigilance officer, KSRTC, Bangalore said: "We are collecting information from all bus stands in the state. We are trying to find out how many bus stands have CCTVs and how many are in need. Once we get that information, we will put up the matter before the MD and a decision will be taken soon. We know that CCTVs in Mangaluru bus stand are not working and have asked Mangaluru division to send all relevant information and also the number of CCTVs required to cover the entire bus stand.
