Inter-faith marriage row: Roshan moves to court alleging Sonia’s family of kidnapping her

Mangaluru: The inter-faith marriage between a Christian girl named Vivitha alias Sonia and a Bajrang Dal activist Roshan Shetty does not cease to entertain the public.

In the latest turn, Roshan Shetty has complained to the court against Sonia’s family alleging them of kidnapping Sonia and also keeping her under house arrest.

Sonia and Roshan entered wedlock on October 16, at Arya Samaj in presence of some of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishat leaders. Within four days, the entire episode took a murky turn with the girl abandoning Roshan and returning to her family and then filing a complaint with the police against Roshan and five others including VHP leader Jagadish Shenava alleging them of abducting her and trying to sexually assault her.

However, in his recent complaint to the court, Roshan has stated that Sonia and he had been in love since three years and had mutually decided to marry each other. Since Sonia’s family had political influence, the two decided to elope and further on Sonia’s suggestion that her family cannot harm them if she converts into Hinduism, they applied for marriage as per Hindu tradition and tied the knot at Arya Samaj on October 16, after Sonia procured required documents from her home on October 14 to culminate the marriage.

Roshan has stated that on the day of the marriage Sonia’s parents had come to Arya Samaj along with Kadri and Konaje police to stop the wedding. But, on that day Sonia stood firm on her decision and refused to go along with her parents. The couple had registered the marriage on October 17, despite life threats from Sonia’s parents.

He said that they had stayed in a lodge in the city for three days and on October 19 Sonia was taken in a blue colour car, which was waiting outside the lodge. Later her family members threatened her and forced her to break this marriage and give statements against him and five others in Konaje police station.

The episode had brought lot of disgrace to Hindu outfit activists.
