Pole thieves on Mumbai’s railway tracks

MUMBAI: Computer engineer and part-time disk jockey Abhishek Majithia (25) considers himself very lucky to be alive after his horrendous encounter with ’railway pole thieves’ near Bandra station on Sunday night.

At around 9 pm, when Abhishek was travelling in an Andheri-bound local, he felt a sudden tug on his left arm after the train crossed Bandra station. " In the dark, I could only notice a man wearing a red T-shirt pulling at my left wrist, to snatch the mobile phone from my hand. He had climbed up a pole that was very close to the moving train," said Abhishek. Even as he lost his balance and started falling off the local, Abhishek instinctively grabbed the vertical bar at the door to save himself.

He also did not let go of his mobile phone, much to the annoyance of the robber. "There were two more associates of the robber on the tracks watching this split-second action. They cheekily shouted at me ’tu toh bachh gaya, baby (you escaped, baby)’."

Shaken, he immediately got off at the next station (Khar) and informed a railway cop about the incident. "I was asked to go back to the main railway police station at Bandra to report the matter. On reaching Bandra, a constable accompanied me to the spot on the tracks.

However, the robbers had fled by then," Abhishek said with a shudder, "for a mobile phone worth Rs 9,000, I could have actually lost my life just like a woman commuter from Kurla, Daksha Guggal, fell prey to railway pole thieves last month.’’ On Monday, a few discarded mobile phone covers were found near this very pole at Bandra. In fact, it is located close to the boundary wall, which helps the thieves to easily flee.

Abhishek added that the railway police even refused to register his FIR. When contacted, deputy commissioner Anil Tamaichekar (WR) said, "This is clearly a case of attempt to commit theft and an FIR must be registered. I will direct my men to do so and Abhishek can approach me if he faces any issues."
