Mumbai - Members of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad had come across the incidents of atrocities committed by police. No redressal was ever sought out of sheer fear, lack of proper and easily available forum etc. This had prompted the members of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad to file a Public Interest Litigation in the High Court of Bombay seeking constitution of Police Complaint Authority at State and District level in Maharashtra as directed by Honourable Supreme Court of India in 2006.

State to create forum to hear complaints against police

Today before the Division Bench of Justice Naresh Patil and Justice A.M.Joshi, the State answered that it will constitute and activate such police complaint authority within a month.

However, Hon’ble High Court passed strictures against this lethargic attitude of the State saying that ‘You are not doing which is for your own good and is in interest of general public, why it has taken so many years to come to this logical step. You should not answer so easily’, saying this, the Court adjourned the matter for two weeks asking further particulars from the State as to the actual implementation.

If such authority is constituted, any person being victim of police atrocities and high handedness can complain to the Police Complaint Authority and the directions, either to initiate disciplinary proceedings or criminal action against the delinquent police officer will be binding.

It is quite unfortunate that the State Government is not implementing this in its letter and spirit in order to protect some criminal minded officers.
