Print Delhi HC dismisses plea for return to ballot papers
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking directions to the Centre and the Election Commission to conduct India’s general elections using ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines. A Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela declined to examine the plea, citing a Supreme Court ruling. The court noted that the top court, in 2024, had held that EVMs are simple, secure, and user-friendly, and that voters, candidates, their representatives, and Election Commission officials are familiar with the system. The petitioner, Upendra Nath Dalai, had raised objections to the use of EVMs in general elections. The Supreme Court previously held that incorporation of the VVPAT system fortifies the principle of vote verifiability, thereby enhancing the overall accountability of the electoral process.
