Print Atishi resigns as Delhi CM, asked to continue in post till new government takes over
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday handed over her resignation to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena a day after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections making a return to power in the national capital after more than 26 years. Mr. Saxena has asked Ms. Atishi to continue in the post till the formation of a new government.
The official handle of Raj Niwas Delhi tweeted on X saying, “Hon’ble Lt Governor, Shri VK Saxena today received the resignation of Hon’ble CM, Ms Atishi. He asked her to continue in her position till the formation of the new government.”
Ms. Atishi had taken over as Chief Minister from Arvind Kejriwal on September 17, 2024 after he resigned days after his release from Tihar Jail on bail. Mr. Kejriwal is charged with money laundering in the alleged Delhi liquor scam and central investigation agencies are investigating the matter.
Ms. Atishi was the third woman to hold the post after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. In the recent Delhi Assembly election, she won from Kalkaji seat defeating former South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes. Atishi, Gopal Rai, Mukesh Ahlawat and Imran Hussain were the AAP ministers who managed to hold onto their seats.
